Summer Palace is located in the northwest 15 kilometres of Beijing city centre.It was built in 1755 when the Emperor Qinlong celebrated his mother’s birthday.Unfortunately in 1860 , the Anglo-French allied forces destroyed the beautiful garden and took the treasure away. In 1888, the dragon lady Ci’xi rebuilt this royal garden using the funds which would be use for the navy. Unluckily again in 1900,the Eight powers (Britain,France,Germany,Russia,United States ,Japan,Italy,Austra )ruined this garden.Empress Dowager Cixi renovated the garden again for the second time in 1903.Most of the buildings you see today are originally built in 1903.The government pay much attention to repair the Summer Palace ,that is the reason you can enjoy the beautiful imperial garden.
It mainly is composed of two parts the Longevity Hill and the Kunming Lake.It covers an area of 2,900,000 square metres about 4 times larger than Forbidden City in size.The lake occupies about two third of the whole area.
The Tower of Buddhist incense is regarded as the centre of the buildings in the garden.There are more than 100 buildings for visiting ,20 courtyards with different sizes,3555 old buildings with the area of 70,000 square metres, more than 3000 rooms built in the form of pavilion ,corridor,table,tower. There are many well known buildings are Long corridor ,Marble Boat, Seventeen archway bridge ,Suzhou street .
Summer Palace was the political and diplomatic activities centre after the Forbidden city in the later Qing dynasty.It witnessed many historical events taking place .Now it become the Museum of royal gardens.
